a master's degree in composition from the New England Conservatory, and a doctorate in composition from Boston University, where her principal teacher was Lukas Foss.

Her catalog numbers over eighty works, representing a wide variety of ensembles. She has written two string quartets, five brass quintets and a brass trio, solo brass, string, and woodwind pieces, piano music, choral music, songs, as well as larger-scale works for band and orchestra and a film score. In addition to writing for professional performers, she has a strong commitment to creating music for young musicians, and she finds writing for an exuberant five-year-old just as rewarding as for a seasoned professional.

Dr. Bernofsky is the recipient of numerous grants, awards, and commissions, and her music has been performed across the United States as well as in England, Wales, Canada, Germany, Spain, Norway, Iceland, New Zealand, and Australia. Her works can be heard on the Polarfonia and Albany labels.
